Important 2025 Rules for Applying in Indonesia

While we are a globally operating agency, we are famous for our deep expertise in the Indonesian jurisdiction (Jakarta and Surabaya). If you plan to attend your interview in Indonesia, please be aware of strict new regulations:

  • Residency Requirement: Starting from 2025, only Indonesian citizens and official residents (KITAS or KITAP holders) can apply for a U.S. visa in Indonesia. If you are on a Tourist Visa, Visa on Arrival (VoA), or any other short-term pass, you are no longer eligible to apply here. The consulate requires strong proof of ties to your country of residence to prevent immigration risks.
  • No Interpreters Allowed: Interpreters are strictly prohibited from entering U.S. consular facilities in Indonesia. You must complete the interview yourself. However, do not worry—the interview requires only basic English, and the questions are usually straightforward.
  • Green Card Lottery Cancelled: Please note that as of 2025, the Diversity Visa (Green Card) Lottery program has been cancelled. Consequently, we no longer offer registration services for this program.

Interview Preparation & Port of Entry Guidance

The consular interview is the most crucial part of the process. Consuls primarily look for two things: a reasonable timeframe for your trip and strong ties keeping you in your country of residence. If you lack ties to the country where you are applying, a refusal is highly likely.

We will thoroughly filter your answers and adapt your real-life situation into a solid visa strategy. Our preparation doesn’t stop at the embassy—we also provide you with the correct answers and behavioral tips for passing the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the airport upon arrival.

Types of U.S. Visas & Validity

For all non-immigrant visas, a single primary form (the DS-160) is required. Supporting documents (which you must physically bring to the interview) depend on the category:

Visa validity varies by nationality. For example, citizens of Canada, the UK, India, the Philippines, and China generally receive 10-year B1/B2 visas. These visas allow multiple entries, with the duration of each stay (usually up to 6 months) determined by the border officer upon entry.

U.S. Visa Appointment Wait Times & Embassy Holidays

Wait times depend heavily on the visa category and the city. Based on recent data, here are the estimated times until the next available interview appointment:

  • Tourist and Business Visas (B1/B2): ~1 Month in Jakarta / < 0.5 Month in Surabaya
  • Students and Exchange Visitors (F, M, J): ~1 Month in Jakarta / < 0.5 Month in Surabaya
  • Work Visas (H, L, O, P, Q): < 0.5 Month in Jakarta / < 0.5 Month in Surabaya
  • Transit and Crewmember Visas (C, D, C1/D): ~1 Month in Jakarta / ~1 Month in Surabaya

For the most up-to-date global wait times, always check the Official Current Status Here.

Which is better: Jakarta or Surabaya?

A common question we receive is where it is better to apply. Because U.S. consular officers follow the exact same standards and procedures regardless of the location, your choice should be based entirely on wait times and travel convenience.

Currently, Surabaya often offers faster available appointment slots for Tourist (B1/B2) visas. Additionally, if you are flying from Bali, Surabaya is geographically closer and offers a shorter, more convenient flight. However, both Jakarta and Surabaya have excellent international airports, leaving the final choice up to your personal schedule.

Important Note on Holidays: When calculating timelines, remember that U.S. Consulates in Indonesia (and worldwide) are closed on:
