New ASEAN-Wide Recognition of Indonesian Driver’s Licenses
As of June 1, 2025, Indonesia’s newly formatted driver’s licenses (SIM A and SIM C) are officially recognized across all ASEAN countries:
Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, Brunei, Myanmar, and the Philippines.
This follows the final implementation of the 1985 ASEAN agreement on mutual license recognition and the integration of regional road systems.
What’s New in the Updated License Format?
- Old format of driver’s license number replaced with NIK (national identity number)
- New icons introduced: car symbol for SIM A, motorbike symbol for SIM C
- Rollout began on July 1, 2024, with old formats phased out as supplies ran out
These updates allow for smoother acceptance of Indonesian SIMs across the ASEAN region — with no need for special permits during short-term visits in most countries.
⚠️ Country-Specific Notes
- Singapore: Indonesian SIMs are valid for up to 12 months from your entry date. After that, you must convert to a local license.
- Malaysia: You must carry both your Indonesian SIM and an International Driving Permit (IDP).
- Always carry your original driver’s license and passport, and follow all local traffic laws when abroad.
