What is a KITAS?
A KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas) is a limited stay permit issued by the Indonesian government to foreigners. It allows you to reside in Indonesia for a specific period.
Types of KITAS
There are several types of KITAS, each with its own eligibility criteria:
- Digital Nomad Visa (Remote Worker KITAS): For freelancers and remote workers.
- Working KITAS: For those employed in Indonesia – obtain your work permit and visa.
- Investor KITAS: For investors who opened a company in Indonesia.
- Student KITAS: For children aged 0 years and above who are in kindergartens or studying in Indonesian educational institutions.
- Dependent KITAS: For the spouse, child and parent of a foreigner holding KITAS, and the spouse, child, stepchild, adopted child and parent of an Indonesian citizen.
- Repatriation KITAS: For ex-WNI (foreigners who are ex-Indonesian citizens).
- Retirement KITAS: For foreigners aged 60 and above.
- Second Home Visa: For individuals investing at least 2 billion IDR in Indonesian banks or purchasing real estate worth at least 1 million USD.
KITAS to KITAP Conversion
A KITAP (Kartu Izin Tinggal Permanen) is a permanent residence permit. Some KITAS holders can convert their KITAS to a KITAP after meeting specific requirements:
- Spouses of Indonesian citizens can convert their KITAS to KITAP after two years.
- Other KITAS holders must hold their KITAS for at least five years before converting to KITAP.
Obtaining a KITAS
You can apply for a KITAS either offshore (online) or onshore (in Indonesia).
- Offshore Application: Apply online and receive your e-KITAS upon arrival in Indonesia as a file and stamp in your passport.
- Onshore Application: Convert your existing 211A tourist visa, C visa or Bridging Visa into a KITAS while in Indonesia.
KITAS Extension and Conversion: A Brief Overview
Not all KITAS (limited stay permit) in Indonesia can be extended or converted into a KITAP (permanent stay permit).
If your KITAS is nearing expiration, carefully review your options. Some KITAS types allow for extension, while others require obtaining an Exit Permit Only (EPO) before applying for a new visa or KITAS.

Popular KITAS options
Remote Worker/Nomad KITAS (E33G): Ideal for remote workers, valid for 1 year. Standard processing takes 5-7 business days – IDR 10.250.000, expedited options are available from IDR 13.250.000. For Pakistan (must use expedited) and Cameroon, an additional fee of IDR 500.000 is charged, and for Bangladesh +IDR 2.500.000.
Important notes on Nomad and Family KITAS
- Remote Worker KITAS: After one year, you will need to leave Indonesia and obtain an EPO before re-entering with a new visa or KITAS.
- Family KITAS: Dependent KITAS is available for family members of KITAS holders. For children aged 0 and above who attend kindergarten or school in Indonesia, a student visa can be obtained, followed by a parent dependent visa. Both student and parent KITAS can be extended, but cannot be converted to KITAP in the future.
