How to Switch from eVOA, VOA, C1, C2, D1, D2, D12 or KITAS to a Student/Dependent Family KITAS Without Leaving Indonesia

If you’re currently staying in Indonesia under a short-term visa or a KITAS, and you want to switch to a Student/Dependent Family KITAS, it is now possible to do so without leaving the country. This process is legally done through a Bridging Visa, which allows you to remain in Indonesia while changing your immigration status.

Which visas can be converted via Bridging Visa

You can switch to a Student/Dependent KITAS through a Bridging Visa from the following visa types:

  • eVOA (electronic Visa on Arrival)
  • VOA purchased at the airport (purple sticker)
  • C1 (tourist visa)
  • C2 (business visa)
  • D1, D2, D12
  • Other valid KITAS types (work, dependent, student, etc.)

For eVOA and VOA: You can apply for a Bridging Visa up to 15 days before your visa expires. If extended, count until the new expiration date.

Important: When using a Bridging Visa, you must switch to a different KITAS type — not the same one you are closing, if you’re switching from a KITAS.

What is a Bridging Visa and why is it useful

A Bridging Visa provides an extra 60 days of legal stay in Indonesia. It allows you to:

  • remain in the country legally after your current visa/KITAS expires;
  • prepare the documents for your new KITAS without rushing;
  • close your current KITAS and stay longer;
  • avoid the 7-day exit rule required with an EPO (Exit Permit Only):

How the Bridging-to-KITAS process works

Step 1: Apply for Bridging Visa

  1. Flado provides sponsorship for the application
  2. We submit the documents through the immigration system
  3. You receive 60 days of legal stay in Indonesia

At this point, you can pause. However, if your goal is to obtain a new KITAS, you must proceed to step two.
Bridging Visa, in essence, acts as a 60-day extension of your current visa if you decide not to apply for KITAS.

Step 2: Apply for your new KITAS

  1. Within the first 29 days of the Bridging Visa, you submit your new KITAS application
  2. At least 31 days must remain on your Bridging Visa
  3. You will receive a new KITAS of a different type — for example, a Student KITAS

What is a Student KITAS and who is it for

The Student KITAS is a residence permit in Indonesia available for one or two years, with the option to renew. It is specifically designed for children attending kindergartens and schools in Indonesia. In the future, parents may apply for a Dependent Parent KITAS linked to the child’s permit, while siblings can obtain a Dependent Siblings KITAS.

Best for:

  • families

Can I use Bridging Visa to close my current KITAS?

Yes. The Bridging Visa is not only for moving from tourist visas to KITAS, but also for closing your current KITAS (Investor, Work, Student, or Dependent) while remaining in Indonesia.

This is especially useful if:

  • You are not ready to leave Indonesia within 7 days (required under EPO)
  • You want time to prepare for your next visa
  • You plan to switch to a different KITAS type

It gives you 60 more days of legal stay while keeping your options open.
