Japan Visa Exemption for 74 Countries and Regions

Japan has visa exemption arrangements with 74 countries and regions for short-term stays. This means many travelers worldwide may not need a regular Japan sticker visa for tourism, business meetings, family visits, or other short-term purposes. However, the rules are not identical for every nationality: some travelers must hold an ICAO-compliant ePassport, some must hold a machine-readable passport, and some nationalities require prior registration or special passport conditions.

Flado can help you check whether your passport qualifies for Japan Visa Exemption, whether an online or pre-travel registration step applies, and whether you can travel without applying through a Japanese visa center in Indonesia. This global eligibility check does not require you to be physically present in Indonesia and does not require an Indonesian KITAS/KITAP when your nationality already qualifies for Japan visa exemption.

1. Japan Visa Exemption / JAVES for Indonesian e-Passport Holders

Indonesian citizens with a valid e-passport / IC passport with chip logo may use Japan Visa Exemption Registration for short trips. This is usually the easiest and fastest route for eligible WNI travelers who plan to visit Japan for tourism or similar short-term purposes.

Japan Visa Exemption example for Indonesian e-passport holders
Example of a Japan Visa Exemption / JAVES notice
  • Who can use it: Indonesian citizens with e-passport / IC passport.
  • Maximum stay: up to 15 days per visit.
  • Validity: up to 3 years or until passport expiry, whichever comes first.
  • Flado service price: 500,000 IDR (approx. USD 28 reference only).
  • Processing time: minimum 3 working days and may take longer during holidays or high-demand periods.
  • Documents: e-passport cover, passport bio page, endorsement pages 4–5, and additional files if requested by Flado.

If you hold an ordinary Indonesian passport without the chip logo, Visa Exemption is not available. In this case, you should apply for a Japan e-Visa / Sticker Visa, or consider making an e-passport for future Japan trips.

2. Japan Visa Exemption for Global Travelers

If you are not Indonesian but your passport is listed under Japan’s visa exemption arrangements, you may be able to enter Japan for a short-term stay without applying for a regular sticker visa. This route is especially useful for travelers who are not in Indonesia, do not hold an Indonesian residence permit, and simply need a clear eligibility check before traveling to Japan.

Because the conditions differ by nationality, Flado checks the key details before you travel: nationality, passport type, ePassport or machine-readable passport status, special notes for your country, expected stay period, and whether a registration or full visa route is required.

Good for global clients: this exemption check is available online. You do not need to be in Indonesia and you do not need KITAS/KITAP if your nationality qualifies for the visa-exemption route.

3. Japan e-Visa / Sticker Visa for Indonesian Ordinary Passport Holders

Indonesian citizens with an ordinary passport must apply through the visa route. In practical terms, this means more documents, a longer timeline, and a stricter review of your itinerary, funds, occupation, and travel purpose.

For WNI applicants, the place of submission is not chosen freely. The Visa Center city is determined by the province shown in the applicant’s KTP. This is important: you cannot simply choose another city because it is more convenient for travel. The application must follow the correct jurisdiction.

Main documents for Indonesian ordinary passport holders

  • Original passport with sufficient validity and blank pages.
  • KTP and supporting civil documents where relevant.
  • Recent bank statement or bankbook for the last 3 months.
  • Employment, business, student, or other occupation proof.
  • Flight reservation with passenger name, route, dates, and flight details.
  • Hotel bookings or accommodation proof matching the itinerary.
  • Daily itinerary / stay plan in Japan.
  • Relationship proof for group or family applicants where relevant.

Purchased flight tickets are not required before document checking. A flight reservation can be used if the passenger name, route, dates, and flight details are clearly visible.

4. Japan Visa for Foreigners in Indonesia: KITAS/KITAP Required

Foreign citizens who want to apply for a Japan visa from Indonesia must normally hold a valid KITAS or KITAP. Without Indonesian residence status, the local Japan visa route from Indonesia is usually not available through this flow.

The applicant’s KITAS/KITAP address is used to determine the correct Visa Center city, similar to how KTP province is used for Indonesian citizens. Flado’s application form automatically assigns the Visa Center city based on the selected province and shows the city only. The full address and final visit instructions are shared after document checking.

Main documents for foreign KITAS/KITAP holders

  • Original passport.
  • Valid KITAS or KITAP.
  • Bank statement or bankbook for recent 3 months.
  • Employment letter, business proof, student proof, or other occupation document.
  • Flight reservation and stay plan.
  • Accommodation proof matching the Japan itinerary.
  • Photo and application form according to Visa Center requirements.

If you do not yet have a KITAS/KITAP, Flado can help you review Indonesian residence permit options first, including KITAS, Remote Worker / Nomad KITAS (E33G), or other categories depending on your situation.

5. Japan Single Entry Visa: Up to 90 Days May Be Requested

A Japan Single Entry tourist visa may be requested for a stay of up to 90 days when the applicant has a complete and consistent proof package. This is especially important for longer stays over 15 days, where the Embassy / Consulate will look more carefully at your travel purpose, funds, accommodation, occupation, and return plan.

Flado’s form blocks trips over 90 days for the standard Single Entry tourist route. For longer or special-purpose stays, contact Flado for manual review before payment.

For Single Entry stays over 15 days, Flado may ask for stronger supporting documents, such as a clearer daily itinerary, more detailed accommodation proof, stronger financial evidence, business ownership proof, school documents, or employment confirmation depending on the applicant’s profile.

6. Japan Multiple Entry Visa Request

A Japan Multiple Entry Visa can be requested by frequent travelers, but it is always approval-based. Having previous Japan travel history, strong travel history, or valid visas from countries such as the United States, Schengen countries, Australia, or similar destinations may help support the case.

If the applicant has no Japan travel history and no strong travel history, Multiple Entry is not recommended as the first option. The Consulate may still issue a Single Entry visa instead of Multiple Entry even if Multiple Entry was requested.

Important: The price for Single Entry and Multiple Entry in Flado’s Japan visa form is the same, but the result is discretionary. Flado cannot promise Multiple Entry approval, validity period, or final number of entries.

7. Visa Center Jurisdiction: KTP Province or KITAS/KITAP Address Matters

One of the most important rules for Japan visa applications from Indonesia is jurisdiction. For Indonesian citizens using e-Visa / Sticker Visa, the Visa Center city is determined by the province shown in the applicant’s KTP. For foreign residents, the same logic is applied using the province in the KITAS/KITAP address.

This means the applicant cannot simply choose Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, or Makassar based only on convenience. The application must follow the correct regional assignment. Flado’s `/appjpn` form calculates this automatically and displays the assigned city before payment.

Example: if your KTP province belongs to the Jakarta jurisdiction, your application should follow the Jakarta Visa Center route. If your province belongs to Bali, Surabaya, Medan, or Makassar jurisdiction, the form will assign the relevant city automatically.

Flado shows only the Visa Center city at the first step. Full address, visit details, and final submission instructions are shared after the document check is complete.

8. Application Forms and Signature Rules

The Japan visa application form and itinerary may be completed by computer or by hand. However, the applicant’s signature must be handwritten with a pen. After Flado has prepared and checked the file, our team may send the official PDF forms if the applicant needs to complete or sign them manually.

Please do not send many documents randomly before the route is confirmed. The most efficient process is to start with the Japan visa application form, receive the correct checklist, and continue the document flow through WhatsApp after payment.

9. Additional Support: Flights, Hotels, Insurance, and Company Owners

Japan visa applications often require a clean and consistent travel plan. Flado can assist with supporting documents and travel structure when needed.

  • Flight reservation support: 200,000 IDR per applicant.
  • Hotel booking support: 200,000 IDR per hotel booking.
  • Travel insurance: not collected as a mandatory Japan checklist item in this form, but applicants can choose insurance separately through Flado insurance page.
  • Company owners / investors: occupation can be shown as company owner or investor. If you own an Indonesian company, NIB and SK may be used. Akta and NPWP may not be needed in simple cases, but Flado may request them if the case requires.
  • Mixed groups: if one applicant is Indonesian and another is a foreign KITAS/KITAP holder, there is normally no special extra document only because the group is mixed. Family Card / KK and family Visa Exemption documents can still be submitted as additional supporting documents where relevant.

10. Japan Visa Processing Time and Public Holidays

Processing time depends on the route and the actual workload of the visa system or Visa Center. As a practical planning rule:

  • Visa Exemption / JAVES: minimum 3 working days where registration or review applies, and may take longer.
  • Foreign passport and Indonesian ordinary passport visa applications: minimum 5 working days and may take longer.
  • Public holidays: holidays in Japan or Indonesia may extend the timeline.

Applicants should avoid booking non-refundable flights and hotels before the visa route, document readiness, and expected timeline are clear. For longer stays, urgent travel dates, or complex nationality/residence cases, it is better to start earlier and allow additional buffer time.

11. How the Flado Japan Visa Process Works

  1. Start the form: open Japan Visa Application from Indonesia and enter your nationality, passport type, residence status, travel dates, and province where required.
  2. Check eligibility and price: the form calculates your route, assigned Visa Center city where relevant, service price, and optional add-ons.
  3. Complete payment: after price calculation, the system creates the payment link.
  4. Continue through WhatsApp: after payment, Flado continues the document flow through WhatsApp and the Japan visa intake process.
  5. Document checking: Flado reviews the passport, nationality, visa-exemption conditions, KTP/KITAS/KITAP where applicable, bank statements, occupation proof, itinerary, flight reservation, hotel bookings, and other supporting files.
  6. Final instructions: once the file is ready, Flado shares the exact next steps, forms, exemption guidance, or Visa Center instructions.
  7. Submission and result: the application or exemption route is processed through the correct channel. Final approval, entry permission, validity, visa type, and number of entries are determined by the Embassy / Consulate of Japan or Japanese border authorities.
