Starting June 1, 2025, SIM A and SIM C Accepted in 9 Southeast Asian Countries
Good news for expats and digital nomads: Indonesia’s updated national driver’s licenses (SIM A and SIM C) are now officially recognized across ASEAN, including Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, and more.
This follows the full implementation of the 1985 ASEAN agreement on cross-border license recognition and the modernization of Indonesia’s licensing system.
What Changed?
- The old license number has been replaced with the NIK (National Identity Number)
- New licenses include vehicle icons — car (SIM A) and motorbike (SIM C)
- Rollout of the new format began July 2024 and is now fully adopted
With these changes, short-term travel within ASEAN just got easier for SIM holders — no extra permits needed in most cases.
Country-Specific Notes
- Singapore: Your Indonesian SIM is valid for 12 months from entry; after that, a local conversion is needed
- Malaysia: Requires both your SIM and an International Driving Permit (IDP)
- Always carry your original license and passport, and follow each country’s road rules
