Investor KITAS and Dependent KITAS Process for Foreign Families in Indonesia
We recently received a request from a family currently on a Visa on Arrival (VoA), in the process of establishing a PT PMA company. The family plans to obtain 2 Investor KITAS (2 years) for the husband and wife, as well as 2 Dependent Visas for their children—a 2-year-old son and a 9-month-old daughter.
In this article, we’ll outline the updated process for obtaining Investor KITAS, Dependent KITAS, and how to use a Student ITAS to sponsor a Dependent KITAS for the parents.
Investor KITAS and Company Setup
To obtain an Investor KITAS for foreign investors, one of the primary requirements is the establishment of a PT PMA (Foreign Investment Company) in Indonesia. The company must meet the capital requirements, which are as follows:
- Minimum capital for PT PMA: IDR 10 billion in shares for the investor to qualify for Investor KITAS.
- For KITAP (Permanent Stay Permit): IDR 15 billion is required for the investor when transitioning from Investor KITAS to KITAP in the future.
If your capital allows, it is advisable to bring IDR 15 billion right from the start, as this will simplify the process when transitioning to KITAP. Of this amount, at least 25% of the capital must be paid in real money and deposited into an Indonesian bank account. This payment will be verified by the notary and authorities handling the registration of the company.
Pre-Investment Visa Options
Before obtaining the Investor KITAS, you can apply for a Pre-Investment Visa (C12), which is a 180-day single-entry visa or a D12 Visa, a 1-year multiple-entry visa (each visit allows 180 days).
- C12 Visa (single-entry): Valid for 180 days.
- D12 Visa (multiple-entry): Valid for 1 year with 180 days per visit.
Once in Indonesia, you can convert these visas into an Investor KITAS, and after that apply for a Dependent ITAS for your spouse. This provides flexibility and gives your family the time to settle in Indonesia while going through the full Investor KITAS process.

Student ITAS and Dependent KITAS for Parents
For the family’s children, the 9-month-old daughter and 2-year-old son, one option is to apply for a Student ITAS for the older child. In December 2025, Student ITAS became available for a duration of 4 years.
- The Student ITAS allows children to attend school or kindergarten in Indonesia. The great advantage of this visa is that it can sponsor Dependent KITAS for the parents, meaning the parents do not need to obtain an Investor KITAS themselves if they are relying on the child’s Student ITAS to sponsor their stay.
- If the child is enrolled in school, the parent can obtain a Dependent KITAS under the Student ITAS sponsorship. This allows the parent to legally stay in Indonesia while the child studies.

Dependent KITAS for Spouse and Children
The Dependent KITAS can be obtained for the spouse once the Investor KITAS has been issued. The Dependent KITAS for the spouse and children will be processed through the same PT PMA company as the primary investor.
For the 9-month-old daughter, she may qualify for a Dependent KITAS from the sibling’s Student ITAS, allowing her to stay in Indonesia under the same visa sponsorship as the older child. The process for Sibling ITAS allows for younger children, like the 9-month-old daughter, to be sponsored by an older sibling attending school.

Summary and Recommendations
In summary, the family can choose from several visa options based on their needs and available capital:
- Investor KITAS can be obtained with IDR 10 billion in shares, and IDR 15 billion if planning to transition to KITAP.
- If the family prefers to avoid the Investor KITAS, the Student ITAS for children can sponsor Dependent KITAS for the parents.
- A Pre-Investment Visa (C12) or D12 Visa can be used to enter Indonesia before obtaining the Investor KITAS.
- If you want to work in the company, you need to apply for an Employment KITAS, because with an Investor KITAS, you can only observe how your company operates, but you are not allowed to be involved in the process.
It is essential to understand that the Pre-Investment Visa and the Student ITAS for children offer flexibility and potentially reduce the need for the Investor KITAS for the parents. If the capital allows, it is advisable to bring IDR 15 billion from the beginning to streamline the future transition to KITAP.
