Work Visas in Indonesia: Key Information and Extension Guidelines

Work visas in Indonesia are available for 6 months, 1 year, or 2 years, but payment for work permits can be made for shorter periods if necessary. It’s crucial to understand that you are only allowed to work during the period that has been paid for. Permits for 1 to 6 months are non-extendable, while permits for 7 months or more can be extended for the same length as the originally issued KITAS. Contracts are typically aligned with the duration of the visa.

Work Permit Levy Rates (as of September 18, 2024, with an exchange rate of 1 USD = 15,485 IDR):

  • 6 months: USD 600 ~ 9,291,000 IDR
  • 1 year: USD 1200 ~ 18,582,000 IDR
  • 2 years: USD 2400 ~ 37,164,000 IDR

Payment is generally made by the employer, but we can assist with this process using the Bank BCA counter rate for USD sales, with a 5% surcharge.

Eligibility and Duration of Work Permits in Indonesia

In Indonesia, the duration of work permits depends on the job position and the level of expertise required for the role. You can request a work permit for the period you need, but typically the Ministry of Manpower follows the logic below:

  • 6-Month Work Permit: Typically suitable for temporary or project-based roles, such as Artists, Athletes, and Short-Term Consultants. This type of permit is ideal for roles that do not require a long-term stay in Indonesia.
  • 1-Year Work Permit: This is the most common duration for work permits and is used for roles like Supervisors, Managers, and Engineers. It suits professionals with ongoing employment contracts that require stability and continuous involvement in business operations.
  • 2-Year Work Permit: Designed for highly specialized occupations and senior professionals, such as Company Executives, Commissioners, or Senior Managers. This permit duration is ideal for roles that are critical to the business and require a long-term commitment.

All work permit applications are reviewed and approved by the Ministry of Manpower, considering the specific requirements and qualifications of the applicant. The final decision on the approval, duration, and type of permit is made by the Ministry based on the needs and alignment with Indonesia’s employment regulations and policies.
