China Visa from Indonesia & Worldwide: Full Guide for Expats and Citizens

Planning a trip or a business visit to China? Getting a Chinese visa (a physical sticker in your passport) while in Indonesia is entirely possible for both expats and Indonesian citizens (WNI). You can also apply from other countries, provided you have legal residency there. The application process involves strict document requirements and online forms. To save you time and eliminate the risk of rejection due to bureaucratic errors, Visa Agency by Flado Indonesia offers a complete, expert “turnkey” service.

Great News for Transit Passengers: If you are only passing through, you might not need a visa at all! Indonesian passport holders are eligible for a 240-hour visa-free transit. Additionally, citizens of 54 countries (including the US, Canada, UK, most of the EU, Russia, Australia, and others) can utilize the 144-hour visa-free transit policy. However, if China is your final destination or you plan to stay longer, you will need a standard visa. Check our rates below.

Crucial Info: Geography, Timelines & Public Holidays

  • Applying in Bali (Denpasar): Only the Standard tariff is available. Processing takes a minimum of 8 working days (plus time for preliminary online checking). Do not expect Priority options here.
  • Applying in Jakarta, Surabaya, and Medan: Standard processing is faster, taking about 4 working days. Both Priority Level 1 and Priority Level 2 options are fully available if you are in a rush.
  • Public Holidays: Visa centers are closed on weekends, during Indonesian national holidays, and officially observe Chinese public holidays. Applications are not processed on these days. We highly recommend starting your visa process at least one month before your planned trip to avoid peak-season delays.

Required Documents for Application

We handle all the heavy lifting with the online system and official forms (you can see a sample of the official application here). All you need to do is fill out our simplified Flado questionnaire and provide the basic document package:

1. Basic Documents

  • Original Passport: Must be valid for more than 6 months with at least 2 blank pages. A copy of the main page is also required.
  • Previous Visas (if applicable): Copies of old Chinese visas. If they are in a previous passport issued within the last 5 years, you must bring the original old passport as well.
  • Photographs: 2 printed photos sized 33×48 mm on a white background (the face should occupy 70-80%). A digital format for online upload is also needed. You can take a selfie on your phone, and we will help adjust it to the official Chinese requirements.

2. Residency Status (Crucial for Expats)

  • A copy of your current visa used to stay in your host country. If applying in Indonesia, holding a residence permit (KITAS or KITAP) is highly recommended and significantly boosts your approval chances. If applying from another country, local residency is similarly expected.

3. Travel Confirmation

  • Flight Tickets: Paid round-trip tickets (in English). You can find and purchase tickets here.
  • Hotel Booking: Confirmed accommodation for at least 3 nights. If you have a complex route, bookings covering the entire stay are required.
  • Travel Itinerary: A day-by-day plan of your trip in China (cities and dates). Our team will help you draft a logical itinerary that satisfies consular requirements.

Biometrics, Personal Appearance and Representative Submission

China introduced biometric visas in Indonesia from February 3, 2021. Under the official Embassy notice, visa applicants may be required to provide all ten fingerprints in person at the visa center. The standard fingerprint exemption categories include applicants under 14 years old, applicants over 70 years old, applicants whose ten fingers are all missing or whose fingerprints cannot be collected, and certain diplomatic, official, or courtesy visa cases based on reciprocity.

At the same time, the current CVASC policy provides an expanded temporary exemption from fingerprint collection for many short-term visa applications with stays of up to 180 days, valid until December 31, 2026. This can be especially relevant for tourist, business, family visit, transit, and similar short-stay visa categories, depending on the exact visa type and the visa center’s current acceptance rules.

Important: We do not state that submission is always possible without the applicant. If fingerprints or personal presence are required, the applicant must visit the visa center personally at the scheduled time. If fingerprints are not required and the visa center accepts representative submission, Flado may be able to submit documents and/or collect the passport through a representative process or a power of attorney, depending on the city and the case.

In practice, our team checks your nationality, visa category, travel duration, application city, and current CVASC rules before confirming whether you need to appear in person. This prevents incorrect assumptions and helps avoid unnecessary travel to the visa center.

Popular Visa Types

Depending on the purpose of your trip, we help process various visa categories:

  • L (Tourist): Standard document package for leisure and sightseeing.
  • M (Business): Requires an official invitation letter from a Chinese company.
  • F (Cultural Exchange): Proof of participation in non-commercial events, exchanges, or exhibitions.
  • Z (Work): Requires a work permit from a Chinese employer.
  • X (Study): Admission letter from an educational institution in China.
  • Q/S (Family): Documents proving family ties with Chinese citizens or residents.

Why Choose Flado Indonesia?

  • No Portal Headaches: The Chinese Visa Center’s “Online Check” system can be unstable and very strict about file formats. We upload and format everything correctly on the first try.
  • Quality Control: We meticulously check every document, booking, and certificate before submission to bring the risk of rejection down to zero.
  • Transparency & Convenience: You don’t have to figure out when or where to submit documents. We organize the entire flow. All you have to do is show up for biometrics if required, and pick up your passport with the visa sticker once the process is completed.
