Updated Information and Restrictions for Onshore KITAS
If you want to change your short-term visa (ITK) to a temporary stay permit (ITAS) in Indonesia, there are specific rules and limitations to keep in mind:
EVOA (Electronic Visa on Arrival)
- Cannot be converted to a bridging visa or KITAS. This has been confirmed by our contacts at Jakarta’s Immigration Office.
Visa Types C and D
- These can be converted to KITAS if there are at least 31 days left before the visa expires.
- If less time remains, you must first obtain a 60-day bridging visa before proceeding.
Note: The onshore process (within Indonesia) has many restrictions and can be complicated. For most cases, applying for KITAS offshore (outside the country) is a simpler, faster, and more cost-effective solution.

Converting ITK to ITAS: Visa Types C and D Requirements
Visa conversion within Indonesia is only possible under the following conditions for visa types C and D:
Sponsorship Requirements
- Type C or D visas must have valid sponsorship.
- The sponsor field in the visa cannot be empty. The sponsor must be an Indonesian citizen (foreigners cannot act as sponsors).
Eligible Conversion Paths
If the sponsorship is correct, the visa can be converted to the appropriate KITAS (onshore type). Examples:
- C/D Visas Issued by Flado:
- KITAS E33G for digital nomads and remote workers: The original visa must indicate Flado as the sponsor.
- C/D Visas Issued by Educational Institutions:
- KITAS E30A for students: Requires a recommendation letter from the Ministry of Education for onshore KITAS processing through the school/institution.
- Offshore student KITAS applications are simpler and can also be handled through Flado sponsorship.
- C/D Visas Issued by PMA (Foreign-Owned Companies):
- KITAS E31B for spouses: For spouses of E28A Investor KITAS holders.
- KITAS E31E for children: For children of E28A Investor KITAS holders.
- KITAS E23/E24/E25/E26 for employees: Requires PT/PMA sponsorship.
- KITAS E23R for freelance artists: PT/PMA sponsorship required.
- C/D Visas Sponsored by an Indonesian Spouse (WNI):
- C/D Visas Issued by Flado (WNI):
- KITAS E31A for spouses, E31C for children, E31G for parents: For relatives of Repatriation KITAS holders.
- KITAS E33F for retirees and KITAS E33E Silver Hair: For senior individuals.
Differences Between Onshore and Offshore KITAS Processes
Onshore Process:
- Conducted via the local immigration office.
- Requires more documents and takes longer.
- Limited by sponsorship and visa type conditions.
Offshore Process:
- Managed through the Directorate General of Immigration in Jakarta.
- Requires fewer documents and has a simpler procedure.
- Faster and more cost-efficient.
In many cases, we recommend visa run options and applying for KITAS offshore.
Conclusion
Switching from ITK to ITAS requires thorough preparation, especially for the onshore process. For a simpler and faster solution, consider applying for offshore KITAS.
