Flight cancellations caused by volcanic activity are more than a travel inconvenience when your permitted stay in Indonesia is close to expiring.
The Anak Krakatau eruption has disrupted domestic and international flight schedules across Indonesia, including routes connecting Bali with Jakarta, Bandung and other affected airports.
Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has remained operational, but passengers can still face cancellations when their destination airport, connecting airport, aircraft rotation or affected airspace becomes unavailable.
For foreign visitors, the most important question is therefore not only:
When is my next flight?
You should also ask:
Will my Indonesian stay permit still be valid when I actually leave the country?
If your answer is uncertain, deal with the immigration issue before your permitted stay expires.
First: Check Your Indonesia Stay Permit Expiry Date
Travellers often refer to their “visa expiry date”, but after entering Indonesia, the important date for immigration compliance is generally the final date of your authorised stay.
Check your immigration documents and confirm the exact last day you are legally permitted to remain in Indonesia.
Then compare it with your new departure date.
For example:
- Your permitted stay ends on 10 September.
- Your original flight was scheduled for 9 September.
- The airline cancels the flight.
- Your replacement flight is now on 12 September.
Your new airline booking does not automatically extend your Indonesian immigration status.
The period between 10 and 12 September must be addressed separately.
How Anak Krakatau Has Affected Flights
The Anak Krakatau eruption caused significant disruption to aviation in western Indonesia.
By the afternoon of 6 September, dozens of flights at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport had been cancelled, delayed or rescheduled.
The largest impact was on services between Bali and Jakarta, although flights involving Bandung, Halim Perdanakusuma and other airports were also affected.

Always check your individual flight directly with the airline as well.
An airport can remain open while your specific flight is cancelled.
This can happen because the aircraft cannot arrive from another airport, the destination is temporarily closed, a connecting sector is unavailable or the airline has to reorganise its schedule.
What Indonesia Immigration Has Done
Indonesia Immigration has introduced emergency measures for foreign nationals whose departure is genuinely prevented by volcanic disruption.
One of the available mechanisms is Izin Tinggal Keadaan Terpaksa (ITKT) — an emergency stay permit used when foreigners cannot leave Indonesia because of circumstances outside their control.
Immigration announced that eligible foreign nationals affected by the Anak Krakatau disruption may receive emergency immigration assistance, including an ITKT for up to 30 days and, in qualifying cases, an IDR 0 overstay charge.
However, this is very important:
A Cancelled Flight Does Not Automatically Extend Your Visa
Do not assume that a volcanic eruption gives every foreigner an automatic extension.
The emergency mechanism is intended for travellers who can demonstrate that they were actually prevented from leaving Indonesia.
Immigration may request evidence such as:
- passport;
- current Indonesian visa or stay permit;
- original flight booking;
- official airline cancellation notice;
- airport or airline confirmation of disruption;
- replacement flight booking, if already issued.
Keep every document connected with the cancellation.
An airline email, application notification or official cancellation letter can become important evidence if Immigration needs to establish why you remained in Indonesia beyond your original departure date.
What to Do If Your Flight Is Cancelled and Your Visa Is Expiring
If your Indonesian stay period is close to expiry, follow these steps.
1. Confirm Your Last Legal Day in Indonesia
Do not estimate it.
Check your immigration documents and determine the exact expiry date of your permitted stay.
2. Save Proof of the Flight Cancellation
Keep:
- airline emails;
- SMS or app notifications;
- screenshots of the cancellation;
- original ticket;
- updated itinerary;
- airline confirmation letter.
If possible, request written confirmation from the airline explaining that the flight was cancelled or rescheduled.
3. Obtain Your New Flight Date
Ask the airline for the earliest available replacement flight.
Once the new ticket is issued, compare the departure date with your immigration expiry date.
4. Do Not Wait Until the Last Day
If your replacement flight is later than your permitted stay, contact Immigration or an immigration service provider before expiry whenever possible.
Depending on your visa type and circumstances, the appropriate solution may be:
- a normal visa extension;
- ITKT emergency stay permission;
- another immigration procedure applicable to your case.
5. Keep All Supporting Documents
Do not rely on a general news article about the eruption.
Your strongest evidence is documentation showing that your specific flight was affected.
What If You Have Already Overstayed?
Act immediately.
Under Indonesia’s normal immigration rules, an overstay of up to 60 days can result in an administrative charge of IDR 1,000,000 per day.
Longer overstays can result in more serious immigration consequences, including deportation and entry restrictions.

Special emergency treatment related to the Anak Krakatau eruption may apply where the overstay was genuinely caused by qualifying aviation disruption.
But do not assume the exemption will be automatic.
Contact Immigration and provide documentation showing why you were unable to depart.
Should You Extend Your Visa Instead?
In many cases, a normal visa extension may still be the simpler solution.
ITKT is intended for an emergency situation where you planned to leave Indonesia but became unable to do so.
If you already intended to stay longer and your current visa is extendable, a normal extension may be more appropriate.
The correct approach depends on:
- your visa type;
- your current permitted stay;
- how many days remain;
- whether your visa is extendable;
- your new departure date;
- documentation provided by the airline.
Airports Are Reopening — But Disruption Can Continue
By 8 September, several major airports affected by the Anak Krakatau eruption had started reopening, including Jakarta’s Soekarno–Hatta and Halim Perdanakusuma airports.
However, reopening does not mean every flight immediately returns to schedule.
After major disruption, airlines still have to reposition aircraft, reorganise crews and restore aircraft rotations.

If your stay permit expires within the next few days, check it now rather than waiting for the airline schedule to stabilise.
A cancelled flight may be outside your control.
An unresolved immigration status can still become your responsibility.
