Archive notice (October 2026): This article documents Indonesia’s entry rules in March–May 2022. Visa categories, vaccination requirements, arrival procedures, and flight routes have since changed. Do not use this historical guide as a current entry checklist. For updated tourist visa information, see our Indonesia Tourist Visa Guide (B1, C1 and D1).
On March 23, 2022, the Indonesian government published Circular No. 15, where it canceled all quarantine measures that were in effect since January 1, 2021. Now you do not need to spend money on accommodation from which you cannot leave. As of April 6, 2022, the PCR test upon arrival in Indonesia was officially canceled for travelers with full vaccination against COVID-19 and no coronavirus symptoms.
Is it possible to come to Bali without a visa or get a visa on arrival?
In pre-COVID times, it was possible to visit Indonesia without a visa for up to 30 days, and citizens of some countries could purchase a visa on arrival (VoA) to extend the stay for another 30 days.
At the time of this article’s original publication, 86 countries could use this option. These visas provided for a maximum stay of 60 days. After that, travelers had to leave the country, since it was not possible to obtain another visa onshore after arriving by VoA.
How to come to Bali for the rest? Only with a pre-issued visa!
In 2022, tourist and business visas under the index B211A were generally issued within 4–5 business days. Travelers could enter Indonesia within three months after the visa was issued. The initial stay was 60 days, with extensions for up to another 120 days, potentially allowing a six-month stay in Bali or elsewhere in Indonesia. These were historical terms and do not describe today’s visa categories.
What was required to obtain tourist and business visas in Bali from March 23, 2022?
- Certificate of full vaccination from any country in English: the name of the vaccine and whether it was one- or two-component were not important.
- Passport valid for at least six months at entry. A longer validity period was needed if you planned to remain beyond 60 days.
- Selfie against a uniform background, similar to a passport photo.

Which airlines flew to Indonesia: Jakarta and Bali?
To search for flights, travelers could use an aggregator such as Aviasales. They could also check flight history on Flightradar24 using the relevant flight number. Past operation does not guarantee that a future flight will operate.
In early 2022, flight programs to Bali were gradually being restored after the airport reopened for international travel. The original article described connections through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Qatar, Istanbul and Australia. These were routes reported at that time, not an exhaustive or current list. See our 2022 article about flights via Kuala Lumpur.
Can I travel to Bali on the same day after landing in Jakarta?
If your connection schedule requires an overnight stop, an airport hotel near Jakarta Soekarno–Hatta Airport can be a convenient option before continuing to Bali.
Hotels mentioned in the original guide include Digital Airport Hotel (Terminal 3), Jakarta Airport Hotel (Terminal 2) and Anara Airport Hotel. Check current availability, terminal access and hotel details before booking.
Do you need a special transfer in Bali?
Once quarantine was lifted, travelers could use regular airport taxis or arrange a private transfer. You can also book a car in advance with Kiwitaxi at a pre-agreed price, with a driver meeting you after your flight.
